A new kidney for Sébastien!

Well, after a patient wait and nearly two years of dialysis treatments, Sébastien is in the O.R. this morning to receive a kidney. David no sooner returned to Winnipeg Monday evening, that almost 24 hours later, they received the call. David took a quick flight back to Toronto last evening and he and Jasmina count on your thoughts and prayers for a smooth surgery and quick recovery! More news to follow!

UPDATE : (from Jasmina) His transplant was called off as they saw his stomach wall was thicker then they expected and they are concerned about it. They want to make sure it is not putting him in danger and they need to investigate more. Please pray for him. And thanks for your continous support.

UPDATE 2 : (from David) The transplant didn’t happen. They didn’t think it was safe. We will explain more over the phone. Thanks for everything.

So, we’re looking forward to talking with David and Jasmina tonight…

I give up

I was quite confident that Jasmina and Sébastien were arriving in Winnipeg this Saturday. Perhaps I should have consulted a crystal ball to see that for a fourth time, the date would be changed. Or maybe I should have known that Murphy’s law is particularly strong when it comes to writing predictions on a blog. So I’m not going to tell you when Jasmina and Sébastien are thinking of rescheduling the flight. You’ll have to guess on your own. And I’ll tell you if you’re right once they come. And I’ll take photo evidence of them in the Winnipeg airport.

We only found out last night, coming home in the car from an evening of errands, my husband noticed David riding his bike. Jasmina and Sébastien are at the hospital, after an unexpected bleed. Color me disappointed, like a blush it was hard to hide. After a week of busy evenings, I was planning to call Jasmina tonight to wish her a safe trip, after all, she’d spent the beginning of the week packing medical supplies to last a lengthy stay.  “Jasmina’s over it” David said. I suppose you develop an immunity after awhile. Our answers are sounding a little repetitive… “With Sébastien you have to expect the unexpected.” Or, “Good thing they’re dealing with it over there.” And then something we don’t say aloud… “We’re still hopeful he comes soon!”

Change of plans

I overheard my husband talking to David about Jasmina and Sébastien’s visit to Winnipeg: “It’ll be for sure, when Jasmina and Sébastien are on the plane!” I figured it was kind of pessimistic. But, it turned out he was right…

David called yesterday, and said that amoung other things, the tests revealed that Sébastien’s lymph nodes were swollen. Not sure of what it might mean and how serious it might be, Sébastien has been scheduled for further tests… a CAT scan, and an MRI. To stay still, he’ll be put to sleep, and David is returning to Toronto Monday. I still hope that a summer visit will be possible…

The sound of suspense is a million silent questions

It’s lunch hour in the office and someone tells me I have a message on my answering machine. “What is it?” I ask, expecting a work-related request. “It’s family… I dunno, I didn’t really listen.” Thinking perhaps they heard wrong, I go and dial my messages. I recognise my father-in-law’s voice with some surprise. “Allô, c’est Léon.” He tells me that he is bringing Sébastien’s grandparents to the airport… they’re leaving for Toronto. Sébastien has more blood clots forming in his head. That’s it… that’s all I know. I phone him back, but little is added. Sébastien’s grandparents fear the worst.

A special thanks to all of you who are following the blog, for your words of encouragement, your thoughts and prayers! When Jasmina or David do have time to read your comments, it is a real comfort for them.

So little to say, while you wait

Yesterday was David’s birthday. We called to wish him well and enquired about Sébastien. “He’s stable…” another way of saying, not much better, and not worse. The blood clots haven’t dissolved and Sébastien is medicated. “We’re waiting for him to wake up,” David tells us…

Say a prayer for me – Sebastien

Mom and dad are very worried for me… I’m in critical care. The doctors found out that I have blood clots in my head and operated me early Friday morning. They decided to place a draining tube in my head to take away any excess fluid and hope that my blood clots will dissolve.

So, if you don’t mind, and have a minute today, please say a prayer for me and for my parents…

Love,
Sebastien

About

C'mon, show your smile!

Place de choix is what you get when you mix a very special godchild with an extraordinary medical history. Sébastien started life with gastroschisis in December of 2004. With the constant care of his parents, David and Jasmina, Sébastien lived to have a liver and bowel transplant in August of 2006. He is now waiting for a kidney transplant in Toronto before coming back home to Winnipeg. This blog is currently updated by Jasmina when time allows her to.
